Background

In Nepal, women in sport, is not a new phenomenon. Women are active in various sports in Nepal and have already participated in national, regional and international competition and their number is significantly increasing every year, they have been organized under Women in Sports (WINS) - a Nepali non-government organization formed in 1997. It is registered in the Kathmandu District Office and affiliated with the National Sports Council. (WINS/Nepal was inaugurated by Her Late Royal Highness Shruti Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah).

WINS/Nepal has been active in promoting women in sports through
> Special awards for pioneering women in the sports field;

> Free table tennis training for women players;

> Publication of WOMEN WORLD (Magazine)/Sports Bulletin;

> Honoring outstanding women players in different events;

> Organizing seminars/workshops on Women and Sports.

> WINS have done a research on women's involvement in sports and their participation in decision- making level in National Sports Federation and sports organizations.

Wins/Nepal is a member of

* International Council of Sports Science and physical Education (ICSSPE), Germany.
* International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (USA)

WINS/Nepal is led presently by Ms. Sita Pandey. Ms. Pandey is the founding president of WINS and has 13 years experience working with the National Sports Council. She is still continuing close contact with the National sports Council, Nepal Olympic Committee and sports organization in Nepal. She is also an Executive member of Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) and General Secretary of the Nepal Basketball Association. She is an ex-officio member of the Asian Basketball Confederation;
Nepal/Director of Sports Tourism International Council, (Canada).
Contact person for Nepal in Women and Sports (Japan).
Ms. Pandey has attended a number of international conferences/programs related to women's involvement in sports, tourism and big sports events (SAF Games/ Asian Games/ Olympic Games). She has published many articles and books women's issues. Has also been honored with several national awards.
